European Union 16th lot of sanctions against Russia, adopted on February 24th 2025, takes place in a complex geopolitical context: EU has decided to continue applying the sanctions in order to maintain pressure on Moscow and support Ukraine. The new measures, which affect several Russian economy strategic sectors, are meant to strengthen EU efforts in preventing sanctions evasion and furtherly limit the resources available to the Russian military-industrial compound system.
In addition, while continuing negotiations with Russia also regarding ceasefire proposed by them, the US strengthened on March 13th 2025 energy sanctions against Russia by effectively permitting the expiry of the “General License” that would have suspended their application.
