Data Center, Renewable Energy and Storage: Digital Italy development prospects

Data centers (or Data Processing Centers – CEDs) have acquired strategic importance in both the private and public sectors, given the current digital transition characterized by Artificial Intelligence advancement and the growing advanced technological infrastructure demand.

These infrastructures have significantly evolved recently: born as simple, unstructured corporate premises, CEDs have transformed into crucial hubs for information management and digital security. Their expansion represents an opportunity to integrate with the energy transition and the development of renewable sources taking into consideration  that, in addition to ensuring digital sovereignty and data security to critical sectors (healthcare, public administration, finance), CEDs imply a systemic challenge that requires harmonizing regulations, electricity grid strengthening and specialized skills development .

“Italy is facing a strategic turning point: in an era where data is increasingly becoming a real resource so regulating, incentivizing, and combining data centers with renewable energy sources is a decision that can no longer be postponed. It is the key to guiding the country toward an advanced, inclusive and environmentally sustainable digital economy model,” points out Teresa Di Mario of Tonucci & Partners in an article published on Quotidiano Energia.
